The phone rang, shattering the fragile peace of the morning. David lunged for it, nearly knocking over a stack of books. He hesitated, staring at the screen. It was his agent.

He answered, his voice tight, strained. The words, when they came, felt like a punch to the gut. He swallowed hard, trying to maintain some semblance of composure.

He paced the room as he listened, each step a measured, deliberate attempt to control the rising tide of… something. He ended the call abruptly, letting the phone clatter to the floor. The world tilted.
